It is a surprisingly complete map of Middle Earth as it was seen in the films, omitting only a handful of minor locations.Įverything is very compressed, of course, and the result is something that feels like a Tolkien theme park. The biggest change is the open world, which acts like the mission hubs of previous games. Lego LotR does very little that is substantially different from its predecessors. There's no doubt that the old formula is getting a little tired. Released late last year, Lego The Lord of the Rings* is the latest pop culture phenomenon to get the Lego treatment, following close behind the release of the licensed toys and presumably intended to achieve some sales synergy with the release of the first Hobbit film. Coming up later in the year will be Lego Marvel Superheroes and a suite of games based around Lego's new line of toys Legends of Chima.

In the years since, we've had Lego games of Indiana Jones, Batman, Rock Band, Harry Potter, and DC superheroes plus the recently-released Lego City Undercover, made by Traveller's Tales' sister company TT Fusion. Clearly, this was a lucrative property, and I am sure Traveller's Tales and their parent company and publisher TT Games had licence-holders lining up outside their offices to get bricked. It's more sales than the entire Mass Effect and Hitman series combined. Putting that into perspective, that's more sales throughout the life of an entire series than Diablo, StarCraft, Gears of War, or The Elder Scrolls. It also shifted somewhere around ten million units across all platforms, and if you include the combined title The Complete Saga and the second sequel based on The Clone Wars, you end up with a series that has sold well over 20 million copies. Easter eggs and pop culture reference abound.
